Join us as Dr. Gooding discusses his book, "Black Oscars: From Mammy to Minny, What the Academy Awards Tell Us about African Americans" as part of our ongoing Behind the Book series.

Dr. Frederick Gooding, Jr. is an associate professor of African American Studies at TCU and Chair of TCU's inaugural Race & Reconciliation Initiative (RRI).

Rather than merely chronicle Black Academy Award winners, this manuscript offers a critical and complete analysis of the various nominated and winning roles for Black actors since the Academy's inception. Dr. Gooding's contribution therefore provides a framework to help readers re-assess not just the quantity, but the quality of Black images over time.
