A new park was constructed at 6th and Jefferson Streets in Springfield in 1987. The Mayor held a "Name the Urban Park" Contest. He appointed a committee to select a name from the public submissions. Union Square Park was dedicated on November 9, 1987.
The collection includes the entries for the park name, the minutes of the Name the Park Committee meeting, Mayor J. Michael Houston’s speech at the park dedication November 1987, and newspaper articles about the naming contest and the park.
